Curriculum & Philosophy

OUR PHILOSOPHY

At Britannia Childcare on East 7th, we see children as capable individuals. We believe that children are curious, and creative learners who actively construct meaning through play, exploration, and relationship.  In a collaborative environment, our children together with the educators, pedagogist and atelierista co-construct knowledge and challenge preconceived ideas about child developmental theories to provide learning that is alive, in relationship with others and working with materials.

Play is at the heart of our pedagogy—it fosters imagination, problem-solving, critical thinking, empathy, and social connection. Our approach honours children’s lived experiences and views them as active participants in shaping their own learning journeys. Through a reflective and intentional practice, we support all children and value multiple ways of thinking. We honour diversity and advocate for the inclusion of all children and families. At Britannia Childcare on East 7th, we provide a safe, respectful and nurturing environment that supports children to grow to their full potential and rooted in a deep respect for the natural world.

CURRICULUM

We embrace a living, emergent curriculum that grows in response to children’s interests, questions, and encounters. Learning is co-constructed through inquiry, collaboration, and dialogue among children, educators, families, and the community. The environment, including the thoughtful use of open-ended and natural materials, is a powerful partner in this process—inviting experimentation, creativity, and reflection.

Our pedagogy emphasizes this connection to land, its histories, and respects Indigenous ways of knowing. We believe learning with nature cultivates care, responsibility, and a sense of belonging. Our goal is to nurture empathetic, kind, and critical thinkers who are engaged with their world and empowered to contribute meaningfully to their communities.
